As AFFA celebrates its 10th anniversary, join us for a special 10th anniversary screening of Lion (2016), one of the most acclaimed Australian films of the past decade.
Directed by Garth Davis and based on the remarkable true story of Saroo Brierley, Lion follows a young Indian boy who becomes separated from his family after accidentally boarding a train thousands of kilometres from home. Adopted by an Australian family, Saroo grows up haunted by memories of the past. Twenty-five years later, armed with little more than fragments of memory and the emerging technology of Google Earth, he embarks on an extraordinary journey to find the family he lost.
A global critical and commercial success, Lion received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Dev Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Nicole Kidman), and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also won two BAFTA Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Dev Patel and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Ten years after its premiere, Lion remains a powerful and deeply moving exploration of identity, belonging, family, and the enduring pull of home. This special anniversary screening forms part of AFFA’s own 10-year milestone celebration.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Executive Producer Shahen Mekertichian, exploring the film’s lasting impact, its production journey, and the art of bringing true stories to the screen.
