Mumma Bear Cushman

Directed by Alan Sarkissian  |  Australia  |  2026  |  53min  |  MA15+

Softly spoken, in a man’s world, Emma Darling Cushman was an American nurse who crossed the world to serve in the Ottoman Empire – then war came, disease spread, and families were torn from their homes, turning her into the woman everyone ran to when the world broke apart. Locals had a saying for it: “Miss Cushman bilir” – Miss Cushman knows – echoing the phrase “Allah bilir,” God knows. Emma bounced through danger in a motorcycle sidecar, stood up to soldiers and officials in their own language, and mothered children whom history tried to erase.

Mumma Bear Cushman is a source-backed docutainment film that projects hope, humour under pressure, and shows the impossible cost of continuing to care when courage comes at a price. Emma is the evidence. The question is ours: how much can a soul carry, lose, and still remain whole?

Mumma Bear Cushman uses AI-generated depictions used only where no archival footage or photographs have survived, to bring this unknown story to life.

Q&A with filmmaker Alan Sarkissian

Alan Sarkissian

Alan Sarkissian is a documentary and video producer based in Australia, working under the Storyfirst Films banner. Mumma Bear Cushman began not in an archive, but at his mother’s kitchen table – in her own recollections, and those of her mother Mariam and that of another orphan, Araxie. Both orphans were raised in Greece in the care of Miss Emma Cushman. Araxie remained close to Emma into adulthood and corresponded with Lucius Thayer – her letters forming part of the same historical record Alan later drew on to verify the family’s story. That family memory, passed down and retold, sent Alan into the historical record to find the woman behind it.

Festival programmers see no shortage of important, worthy, heavy documentaries. Alan crafted Mumma Bear Cushman on his faith in the unconventional approach – a documentary which leads with personality, dry wit, and a true story too strange to need embellishing. The result was produced using his own Storyfelt Arc storytelling methodology – designed to bring real historical figures to audiences with the emotional immediacy of narrative film.
