Directed by Inna Sahakyan (Aurora’s Sunrise, AFFA 2024) and Ruben Ghazaryan, Outliving Shakespeare is a poignant documentary set in a derelict Soviet-era retirement home in Armenia, where a group of elderly residents gathers to rehearse the original play Shakespeare’s Sins. As they journey from auditions to opening night, rehearsals become a source of friendship, purpose, and renewed identity. Blending humour with quiet heartbreak, the film looks into how the characters they play struggle with love, loss, betrayal, and exile, mirroring the residents’ own lived experiences. As tragedy in theatre and reality intertwine, this documentary becomes a moving reflection on the loneliness that comes with aging and the power of community to transform lives.
